Let's End Poverty Together
By April Annechiarico – 14 October 2014
Leave no one behind: think, decide and act together against extreme poverty.
That is the theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2014 on October 17. And that’s exactly what we work towards here at emerge poverty free. Across Africa, we work with local partners to enable communities to address their needs and priorities themselves. With every project, we make lives better, but there is still a lot more to do.
According to the United Nations global poverty rates have halved since 1990 but there are still 1.2 billion people – too many by far – living in extreme poverty and experiencing the soul-crushing despair of not being able to meet their basic needs.
Helping these people end the cycle of poverty is the heart of the post-2015 development agenda discussion, and October 17 offers all of us a chance to promote awareness of extreme poverty and share ideas on how to end it.
We can eliminate poverty, but only by coming together, listening to those who are the most in need and acting accordingly. At emerge poverty free, we draft specific and sustainable needs-based programmes because we want to be sure that the good we do lives on through the energy and initiative of the people we help.
For example, we have partnered with the Strive Foundation in Rwanda to assess the needs of women living on the edge of the capital Kigali.
They told us they wanted a savings project to aid in their economic development. This programme will empower these women by teaching them the skills needed to start a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA). In areas underserved by traditional financial institutions, VSLAs enable women to save more efficiently. These associations are self-regulating, self-reliant groups run by their members.
This kind of association epitomises the spirit of this year’s theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The women are thinking, they are deciding what they need, we are helping them act, we are leaving no one behind.
Together, we can achieve a world that is poverty free. Please click here to donate to the work of emerge poverty free, and help us make that world a reality.
