Project Agricultural Sustainability in Kakuma

Kenya

Following the emergency food distribution in the Turkana region during the 2011 food crisis in the Horn of Africa, emerge poverty fee raised much needed funds to enable the community of Kakuma to start up an agricultural programme.

Working with our local partner, Akitare Erai Akiyar, emerge poverty free secured the land and the seeds for over 100 people to get involved in sustainable agriculture. Turkana region is regularly affected by the food shortage mainly due to the drought during the dry season. Water is scarce already and dry river beds are a sad sight to behold. In November 2012, emerge poverty free funded a drilling of a water borehole with a view of making this programme truly sustainable and the community less vulnerable to the climatic conditions.
